Charles De Coster (1827-1879)

In 1868 he became immortal as the author of la Légende et les aventures héroïques, joyeuses et glorieuses d'Ulenspiegel et de Lamme Goedzack au pays de Flandres et ailleurs (The legend and the heroic, joyous and glorious adventures of Ulenspiegel and Lamme Goedzack within the land of Flanders and without ). In this masterpiece he opposed the independence of the secular spirit to the dogmatism of the clerical powers.
