Achille Van Acker (1898-1975)

He was a self-made man who had to leave school at the age of 10. He took evening courses and eventually became doctor honoris causa at Lille University.
In 1927 he became a member of parliament for the Socialist Party. He was Mayor of Bruges, minister and Prime Minister. From 1961 till 1974 he presided the Chamber of Representatives. Minister of State. Leading figure of the resistance during WWII.
